The aim of this book is to confront our hidden motives directly — to track down the darker, unexamined corners of our psyches and blast them with floodlights. Then, once our minds are more clearly visible, we can work to better understand human nature: Why do people laugh? Why are artists sexy? Why do we brag about travel? Why do we prefer to speak rather than listen?

The beans contain a substantial amount of strychnine, a bitter substance that is often used in rat poison. Strychnine is fatal to humans if taken in large doses. Small doses cause headaches, loss of appetite, cramps, muscle twitching, trembling, frightening dreams, cold sweat, nervous laughter, and giddiness.

The following day, as I was getting ready to head into downtown Frankfurt to meet my friend Megan, who travels and writes about it for a living, my mother-in-law told me how nervous she was for me to be going into the city center. I was a little nervous too – it was so unlikely anything bad would happen, but not impossible. It’s never impossible.
